Covima and Biocarbono Orinoquia: Innovation for Forest Conservation

Enciso Systems presents the Covima Application during the Event "Use of the natural forest as a generator of opportunities for sustainable forest development"

Enciso Systems presents Covima during the event "Use of the natural forest as a generator of opportunities for sustainable forest development", organized by the Biocarbono Orinoquia Project. Covima, initially conceived by GGGI Colombia and developed for the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, strengthens forest surveillance and combats illegal logging. This innovative tool represents an advance in the protection of natural resources and promotes sustainable forest development in Colombia. The presentation of Covima offers regional and municipal actors the opportunity to understand its importance in forest management. Enciso Systems reaffirms its commitment to working collaboratively to promote sustainable forestry practices.

Enciso Systems, a leading technology company, is proud to present the Covima (Wood Control and Surveillance) application during the event "Use of the natural forest as a generator of opportunities for sustainable forest development", organized by the Biocarbono Orinoquia Project - Sustainable low-carbon landscapes. This event took place on April 23, 2024 and aimed to socialize the different products generated within the framework of the project.

Covima is an innovative tool developed by Enciso Systems and the leadership of GGGI Colombia for the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, designed to strengthen surveillance and control of illegal logging [1] and unauthorized forestry activities [2]. This application represents a significant advance in the protection and conservation of our natural resources, as well as in promoting sustainable forest development in Colombia.

The presentation of Covima during this event offered a unique opportunity for regional and municipal actors to become familiar with this tool and understand its importance in the comprehensive management of forests [3]. Likewise, we invite all participants to actively get involved in future phases of Covima, thus contributing to its continuous improvement and the promotion of its effective use in their respective areas of influence.

Enciso Systems reaffirms its commitment to continue working collaboratively with all stakeholders to promote sustainable forestry practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.

Notes

[1] Colombia is home to one of the greatest biodiversity in the world, with approximately 10% of the known flora and fauna. However, deforestation threatens this biological wealth, as it is estimated that the country loses around 200,000 hectares of forests each year, seriously affecting endemic and endangered species.

[2] Deforestation in Colombia is driven by a variety of factors, including agricultural expansion, illegal mining, extensive livestock farming, road construction, and illegal exploitation of natural resources. This diversity of causes makes addressing the problem complex and requires comprehensive and coordinated approaches.

[3] The use of technology, such as satellite images and geographic information systems (GIS), has enabled more effective monitoring of forests and has contributed significantly to the prevention of deforestation. For example, by combining satellite data with machine learning algorithms, researchers can monitor changes in forest cover in real time and detect illegal activities, such as unauthorized logging. This technology has proven to be an invaluable tool for environmental authorities and conservation organizations in the fight against deforestation, by providing accurate and timely information for decision-making and the implementation of preventive measures. The incorporation of these technologies sets the course for future phases of Covima's development.
